Penang being a colonial island brings much historic value to its
existence. Having come from a 16th century era of British rule, it still holds many of its historical
structures. If you’re in Georgetown be sure to visit Fort Cornwallis, which was the main lookout point for
security in its day. A walk around will show you original imported cannons from the time of Francis
Light!
Temples are a popular tourist destination, the most being the
Kek Lok Si temple. Its path to the temple doors already beckon you to walk up its stairs adorned with little shops
on either side. It feels as if you’re walking through a cave of shops. The top greets you with a huge flock of
tortoises and beyond that is serene bliss one can only feel at sacred grounds. Kek Lok Si will wow you with its
magnificence.
For a step in time to the Peranakan days, visit the Cheong Fatt Tze
Mansion. He was a Chinese businessman who had designed his home to the points of Feng Shui ensuring that the
flow of air in the house could reach every corner. Its design and interior are heavily influenced by a mix of
Baba and Nyonya culture, Chinese, and European materials. The eclectic style of the house is an awe to
many.
On Cannon Road, you will find a quaint hide-away called the Khoo
Kongsi, meant for the clansmen of the Khoo descend. The difficulty locating the hidden entrances suggests a
protective effort to keep their clan out of trouble. Some traditions of theirs are still kept but they are
slowly evolving with the times to keep up with modernity.
